Responsible Service (Of Alcohol) Code Of Practice
The Responsible Service Code of Practice is a set of guidelines designed to minimise the harmful and hazardous use of liquor and to ensure there are responsible attitudes when it comes to the promotion, sale, supply and consumption of liquor.
It is a condition of a liquor licence that a licensee must comply with the code. If a licence-holder does not, he or she will be in breach of the licence and could face penalties in accordance with the Liquor Licensing Act 1997.
The code consists of a framework governing issues such as minors (persons under 18 years old) consuming or being supplied with liquor on licensed premises and minors entering areas on licensed premises that are out of bounds to them.
The code also deals with issues surrounding intoxication and disorderly or offensive behaviour. For example, a licensee must take steps to guard against the unlawful supply of liquor to intoxicated customers.
According to the code, advertisements for liquor cannot encourage minors to consume liquor or encourage rapid or excessive consumption of alcohol.
